Importance of Certification

Amid currently global concern over climate change mitigation, forest conservation, destructive forest fires etc., in reality, the Indonesian forest sector is taking significant steps towards sustainability and responsible forest management. Government is rolling out its wide mandatory with the implementation of the Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK) which focus on its origin legal and its compliance with forest management standards. Additionally, almost a quarter of all active forest concessions are taking additional steps voluntarily towards FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification. Sustainable management to provide benefits to the local flora, fauna and communities. Therefore FSC certification is as a path to sustainable management.

Overall, the Borneo Initiative is the largest non-profit foundation which supports forest certification  for the tropical areas, both in terms of area and number of companies involved. The Borneo Initiative operates as a platform to establish partnerships between various organizations such as APHI, TFF, TFT, TNC and GFTN, government , foreign timber companies, and  both FSC and SVLK bodies.

A tradition in quality, which increases the competitiveness of the forestry sector

Wood industries in Indonesia have a sound reputation for craftsmanship and quality, with the capability to comply with international product standards. Indonesian wood industries are able to fulfill the supply of ply-woods, wood flooring, decking, moldings and joinery, garden wood, indoor and outdoor furniture, and certified wood chips.

Stop Deforestation

Almost 20% of the CO2 emissions associated with deforestation, Indonesia's 1.8 million hectares of tropical forest are lost per year for opening industrial farms or are degraded as a result of uncontrolled logging. The process of deforestation must be stopped, by making clear boundaries, so the agricultural sector cannot thrive in the forest, instead, the agricultural sector can be directed to develop the degraded and abandoned lands.

*Mr. Loy Debra Jones as Group Manager of APCS gave speech on the importance of certification for sustainable forest which affects the Indonesian timber market, profits for corporates and government, and on issues of forests in Indonesia.

Guaranteed best supply of a broad range of species

Indonesia has vast areas of production forest, consisting of both plantation forests and natural forests. The forests produce a wide range of tropical hardwood species with a reliable long-term supply capacity.

The mission of the Borneo Initiative is to bring together supply and demand for "certified" timber, to encourage better offer and to increase profitable demand for timber industries and consumers. Most of the timber used in construction in the Netherlands came from Indonesia. Due to the program, FSC certified timber will become the most preferred choice for the construction of dozens of homes for years to come.

The seminar which lasted for 2 days and was attended by local and foreign  entrepreneurs who has been engaged in the world of forestry both domestically and abroad, was closed with factory visit to PT. Sumbermas Indah Plywood.
